NVIDIA RTX 50 series vs RTX 40 series: what’s new for 8K?
In a bit of a deep dive, the 91 mobiles blog digs into some of the features of the Nvidia RTX 50 series GPUs which were announced at CES and which included DisplayPort 2.1 for the first time from the firm. The article clarifies that the output of the series supports DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 with up to 8K 165Hz using Display Stream Compression (DSC).
The boards support Multi Frame Generation. This new approach can generate up to three additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame, achieving up to an 8 times performance boost compared to native rendering. There’s a backgrounder here on YouTube about the feature.
There is also, according to the site, hardware support for 4:2:2 pro-grade colour format encoding and decoding, delivering up to 11 times encoding speed increase compared to software encoders. The 9th-gen NVENC video encoders improve HEVC and AV1 encoding quality by 5%, with an additional AV1 Ultra Quality mode further enhancing efficiency. Meanwhile, the 6th-gen NVIDIA decoder is said to enable seamless playback of up to eight 4K60 4:2:2 video streams simultaneously.
