NHK implements VVC with video content layering – Looks at 8K VR Quality

NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) in Japan likes to tell the world about its developments and this week there were two interesting announcements.
First, the organization has demonstrated how the VVC codec can be used to allow different layers to be delivered by broadcasters. This would mean that, for example, a sign language or with subtitles could be overlaid, reducing the need for multiple broadcast streams. We reported on this concept when NHK talked about it at IBC in 2022.
In the second development, the company said that it was looking at subjective video quality for 360 degree 8K VR content.
