Netflix Expands AV1 Film Grain Synthesis Support
As we have reported, the AV1 codec mandates the support of film grain synthesis. We wrote about it after we saw an interesting demo by the Fraunhofer HHI at IBC last year. Now, in a technology blog article, Netflix said that it is scaling up its use of the technique after only enablingb it for a limited number of titles during its initial launch of the AV1 codec in 2021.
The article said that a follow up article will cover the encoding pipeline, so we’ll be watching for that.
