Brazil Planning Phase 2 for Next Generation Broadcast Solution

The government of Brazil wants to develop a next generation broadcast solution and has formed the Brazilian Digital Terrestrial Television System (SBTVD) Forum TV 3.0 Project. A Call for Proposals was issued in 2020 and the submission period was just closed.  The Forum received 36 responses from 21 different organizations worldwide covering 6 system components (Over-the-air Physical Layer, Transport Layer, Video Coding, Audio Coding, Captions, and Application Coding).

The video coding component is required to support 8K/120fps for Internet delivery (that doesn’t mean that all receivers will be required to support that rate, however). No 8K support is required for over-the-air delivery, however.

Some similar proposals were merged for the sake of Phase 2 testing and evaluation, resulting in the following 33 candidate technologies:

Phase 2 tests are expected to be performed in the second half of 2021. Once finalized, the testing and evaluation reports are going to be made publicly available by the SBTVD Forum.
