TCL CSOT Make Strides to Increase Frame Rates for 8K
According to Gizmodochina, TCL’s display panel subsidiary, CSOT, demoed a 75” 8K display that featured their amorphous-silicon backplane technology with a 1-gate/1-drain (1G1D) transistor design. This basic architecture should be very economical to produce as it requires only four masks to fabricate. Most incredible is the 265 Hz frame rate the company achieved compared to the alternative IGZO backplane technology, which is usually needed for higher frame rates for 8K performance.
We wrote an in-depth article on the 1G1D technology last May, noting the demonstration of an 85” 8K display running at 120Hz frame rate – an impressive feat at the time (TCL CSOT Shows New 8K Panels and Technology). The 265Hz operation is a new milestone.
The 8K panel demonstrated last May used an IGZO backplane. Specifications include an 8-domain pixel structure for wide viewing angles, 4.5% transmission, better than most 8K panels, and a contrast ratio of 5000:1 using an HVA mode liquid crystal – extremely good for the native display. One of the significant advantages of the IGZO backplane is the reduction in power consumption – 30% lower than other technologies (presumably conventional a-Si), claimed CSOT.
The latest 75” 265Hz 8K display uses an a-Si backplane, which typically offers lower performance. This innovation is all the more significant as this is the easiest and lowest cost backplane technology. It also demonstrates that the new 1G1D architecture can be fabricated in a-Si.

In the news report on this demo, the team also claimed to have “further refined the pixel architecture design, and the H-HVA transmittance has increased by 10% year-on-year. This architecture is based on the first-gen 8K 1G1D technology.” They also said that “the second-generation 8K 1G1D technology is also equipped with a unique HCC row variable charging technology. This technology is paired with a high-drive GOA and compensation circuit design that uses 8K CSPI in-screen high-speed transmission technology. All this increases the transmission frequency by over 7.5 times.”
We have reached out to CSOT to get more details on the definitions of these technology acronyms and the technical details of each technology. We can provide the definitions, but the technology remains confidential, said CSOT.
