Comment – One Petabit/s Fiber Can Deliver 10 Million 8K Streams

The 8K Monitor often discusses various hurdles to wide-scale 8K adoption. If there was any lingering doubt, this Japanese world record shows that a single fiber can carry enough data to transmit over 10 million 8k channels at today’s (HEVC) compression ratios. The hardware at each end of the fiber may not be standard equipment. However, the lab test does use the same fiber as what’s currently in the ground, which is a first (many previous records used new generations of fiber). So even if a future metaverse leads to myriads of personalized high-resolution feeds, the core network’s data capacity would not be the bottleneck. Here is the NICT press release. |
