Allegro DVT Encoder/Decoder IP Supports 8K
Allegro DVT focuses on developing encoding and decoding silicon IP blocks that can be used in encoding/decoding solutions. They now have several encoding and decoding IP cores that support 8K using multiple codecs including AV1, VP9, HEVC, AVC and JPEG.
For example, the AL-E210 encoder IP can support real-time and file-based encoding with AV1 (main profile – 4:2:0 in 8 or 10-bit) with resolutions up to 8K and frame rates to 60 fps (120 fps for 4K content). If 12-bit 4:4:4 8K/60 content encoding is desired, then the HEVC codec can be used with this IP core. The AL-E200 IP core supports 8K/30fps and 4K/120 fps but only using HEVC.
Allegro did not provide any benchmarking data to understand the encoding times and complexity to achieve the various scenarios.
On the decoding side, the AL-D310 is their hardware-based IP core that supports AV1, VP9, HEVC, AVC and JPEG with 8-, 10-, and 12-bit support and 4:2:0, 4:2:2 ands 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. Specific 8K codec, frame rate, bit depth and chroma sampling support is not disclosed not if it can be done in real time. The AL-300 core only support HEVC, AVC and JPEG.
