8KA Releases New Report: The State of Live 8K Video Production
The 8K Association (8KA) has released a new report titled: The State of Live 8K Video Production. Produced by the members of the Association’s Encode/Decode committee, the report covers:
- 8K Broadcast standards
- Coding standards
- Encoders
- Decoders
- Demonstrations of live 8K video production
A free webinar discussed the findings on December 8 conducted by lead author Mauricio Alvarez-Mesa, CEO of Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH.

The report confirms that after many years of development, trials and demos, 8K live production is practical today using the HEVC codec. Already over a dozen encoders can support 8K contribution and/or distribution needs. Such encoders have been realized using a variety of hardware solutions including ASIC, ASIC in GPU, FPGA, software running on CPU, or hybrid configurations in cloud or on-premises instances.
Plus, newer codecs like VVC, AV1 and AVS3 are being developed and evaluated for roll out in the coming years to support 8K video services. These codecs are now being evaluated by DVB and the Brazilian Next Generation TV committee for such services.
Most importantly, these codecs and encoders can support broadcast formats like transport stream, or streaming formats like HLS or DASH. Hardware decoding of HEVC and AV1 is available in 8K TVs now, setting the stage for service providers to consider rolling out 8K channels.
