DVB Reports on Film Grain Synthesis
We reported on Netflix’s increased use of film grain synthesis (FGS) in the AV1 codec last week. Now the DVB standards body has published its report on the use of the technique in DVB environments and has concluded that there is not evidence that “a complete value chain would be in place for the use of Film Grain Synthesis techniques in DVB environments”. Although FGS can be supported in MPEG codecs, as the Fraunhofer HHI has demonstrated, it is not mandatory in those codecs, while support is mandatory in AV1.
