Brazil Officially Adopts ATSC 3.0 Technologies for its Next-Generation Television System

Brazil has now officially adopted ATSC 3.0 technology for its new TV system with a Presidential Decree. ATSC 3.0 technology is used in Brazilian DTV+ format’s core Physical and Transport layers, as well as the Video, Audio, Captioning and Emergency Warning systems. 80% of viewers in Brazil use DTV so the technology in use has greater significance than in some other countries.

As was pointed out to us by an engineer at last year’s NAB, the use of ATSC 3.0 does allow for 8K broadcasts and Brazil has said that it can use the LCEVC codec to add an enhancement layer for higher resolution content
