Big Screens & Gaming are Hot at CEDIA 2024
At the recent CEDIA trade show, the 8K Association’s Director of Operations was interviewed by Mark Henninger, Managing Editor of Sound & Vision about the development of 8K technology and where it’s going.Â
Reyes started by highlighting the interest of visitors to the Association’s booth at Cedia in discussing the technology, but also following up on the two panels that the Association organized at the event. Topics raised by visitors included 8K content capture and creation as well as the development of the 8K ecosystem.Â
Henninger mentioned that one of the big changes in the market in the last year has been the development and supply of really large TVs up to 100″ and Reyes explained that the larger the display, the greater the importance of 8K. The Association had a Samsung 85″ TV on the booth as well as the Hisense 120″ 8K projector. Visitors to the booth could see the immersiveness of the content shown on these large displays. As the recent White Paper from the Association explains, the power of 8K lies in the ability to provide immersion and hyper-realism at the same time.
The Pipeline is Here
Henninger raised the improved ability of signals to be transmitted over HDMI 2.1. The pipelines are here and Reyes outlined that the Association is working with content owners and providers (such as IMAX which is an 8K Association member) to help develop the workflows and technical ecosystem from capture through to display. The full pipeline from glass to glass is available now, through cameras such as RED and Blackmagic Design, editing, encoding and decoding. Reyes pointed out that 8K with VVC is in the same ballpark as 4K with earlier codecs so there is no need for additional network infrastructure to distribute it.
There is a lot of interest in gaming and that’s an exciting area at the moment. Reyes confirmed that 8K 60P is here with HDMI 2.1 and the content on the booth was at 8K 60P with HDR10 and “looked amazing”. Henninger said that in his own experiments, you don’t have to use filters to “get rid of jaggies” – you just don’t see them because there is enough resolution. That helps to speed up the processing, he said, so you don’t get the hit that you might expect in terms of frame rate because you have cut back on the processor power used for anti-aliasing.
Reyes summarized the position that the 8K ecosystem is here now and the Association is continuing to develop the content availability and build its membership to further promote the level of 8K content that’s available. He also described the content of the White Paper which was being distributed in a printed format to Cedia visitors.
